New registrations of electric vehicles in Europe increaseS year on year

In 2022, the European Union (EU) made significant strides in the adoption of electric cars and vans, with electric vehicles (EVs) representing 21.6% of new car registrations and reaching close to two million registrations, up from 1.74 million in 2021. Electric vans also saw growth, comprising 5.5% of new registrations. Battery electric vehicles (BEVs) constituted the majority of electric van registrations.

Given the transportation sector’s substantial contribution to EU greenhouse gas emissions, reducing emissions is crucial for meeting the EU’s climate neutrality goals. Stricter EU-wide CO2 fleet targets set by Regulation (EU) 2019/631 require a 15% reduction by 2025 and, from 2030 onwards, a 50% reduction for vans and a 55% reduction for cars, relative to a 2021 baseline. This regulation also aims for zero-CO2 emissions from new cars and vans by 2035, necessitating a significant increase in EV adoption.

The penetration of EVs, including BEVs and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), has been steadily increasing. In 2022, almost 22% of newly registered passenger cars were electric, with BEVs accounting for 12.2% and PHEVs for 9.4% of total new car registrations. The average mass and energy consumption of these vehicles vary, with BEVs having an average range of 393 km and PHEVs of 61 km in electric mode.

Despite significant growth, BEVs represent only 1.2% of the European car fleet, highlighting the need for further expansion to meet emissions reduction targets. Norway, Germany, France, and Iceland led in new BEV registrations in 2022. To support electric mobility, various measures have been implemented across Europe, including financial incentives, investments in charging infrastructure, public procurement of EVs, and consumer incentives like preferential parking and road toll exemptions.
